How This Calculator Works
The idea that one cat year equals seven human years is a rough oversimplification. Cats age quickly in their first two years — reaching the equivalent of a young adult human by age two — and then their aging rate slows.
This calculator uses the age-comparison model published by the Cornell Feline Health Center:
- Year 1 ≈ 16 human years
- Year 2 ≈ +5 human years (total ≈ 21)
- Each year after ≈ +4 human years
The conversion figures follow guidance from the Cornell Feline Health Center, and the life-stage labels align with the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the "one cat year equals seven human years" rule accurate?
No. Cats mature rapidly in their first two years. The first year is roughly equivalent to 16 human years, the second year adds about 5 more (reaching 21), and each year after that adds roughly 4 human years.
What is the scientific basis for this calculator?
This calculator uses the age-comparison model published by the Cornell Feline Health Center: year 1 ≈ 16 human years, year 2 ≈ +5 (total ≈ 21), and each year after ≈ +4. Life-stage labels follow the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines.
When is a cat considered a senior?
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines define cats over 10 years old as senior. Cats aged 15 and older are commonly called super senior or geriatric — an informal label beyond the four official stages.
Can this calculator replace a veterinary exam?
No. This tool provides an estimate for educational purposes only. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for health assessments, especially for senior or geriatric cats.
Do indoor and outdoor cats age differently?
This calculator does not distinguish between indoor and outdoor cats. Outdoor cats often face more environmental risks, but the basic aging model is similar. Individual health, genetics, and care have a much larger impact than lifestyle alone.
