What is Monstera (Swiss Cheese Plant)?

Monstera is moderately toxic to both cats and dogs — needle-like calcium oxalate crystals burn the mouth, causing drooling and vomiting. It is not usually life-threatening.

Also known as: monstera deliciosa, swiss cheese plant, split-leaf philodendron, monstera adansonii, fruit salad plant, ceriman.

Symptoms to Watch For

🐕 In Dogs

  • Burning and irritation of the mouth, lips, and tongue
  • Heavy drooling and pawing at the mouth
  • Vomiting and difficulty swallowing
  • Hoarse vocalization or reluctance to eat

🐈 In Cats

  • Burning mouth irritation and heavy drooling
  • Pawing at the mouth and head shaking
  • Vomiting and reluctance to eat
  • Hoarse meowing from throat irritation

What to Do If Ingested

  1. Remove any remaining leaf material from the mouth.
  2. Rinse the mouth with water or offer milk or ice to soothe the irritation.
  3. Offer water but do not force food while the mouth is sore.
  4. Call a vet if drooling, vomiting, or refusal to eat persists beyond several hours.

Steps apply to both cats and dogs. When in doubt, call a vet or poison hotline before acting. Have a cat? Run the Pet Poison Triage Wizard for cat-specific steps.

When to Call the Vet Immediately

Call your veterinarian or a poison control hotline right away if you notice any of these:

  • A large amount was eaten or the mouth is badly swollen
  • Persistent vomiting or refusal to eat
  • Breathing difficulty or severe swelling of the tongue or airway

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does monstera burn the mouth?

Monstera contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals — microscopic needles that fire into the tissues of the mouth and throat when the leaf is chewed, causing instant burning pain, drooling, and swelling. The same mechanism applies to pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia, and ZZ plants. The pain itself usually stops most pets after one bite.

Is monstera fruit dangerous too?

Yes, if unripe. Monstera deliciosa earned its name because the fully ripe fruit is edible for humans, but unripe fruit is full of the same oxalate crystals and will irritate the mouth of pets and people alike. Practically speaking, keep the whole plant — fruit included — away from pets.

How can I keep my cat away from my monstera?

Place it on a high shelf or in a room the cat cannot access, or offer a cat grass pot as a safe alternative to chew. Bitter apple spray on the leaves helps some pets. If your cat persistently targets houseplants, choose pet-safe plants instead — spider plants, calathea, peperomia, and money trees are all non-toxic options.
