Is latex (water-based) paint dangerous if my pet licks it?
Latex paint is generally low in toxicity and small amounts usually cause only mild drooling, vomiting, or stomach upset. The bigger risks are larger amounts, additives, and the vomiting itself. Still call a vet with the product name and amount, especially if your pet vomits or seems unwell.
Why is oil-based paint and paint thinner more dangerous?
Oil-based paints and solvents like mineral spirits and turpentine contain petroleum hydrocarbons that affect the nervous system and, most importantly, can be inhaled into the lungs during vomiting and cause severe aspiration pneumonia. That is why you should never induce vomiting after these products.
Can paint fumes hurt my pet?
Strong solvent fumes in a poorly ventilated room can irritate a pet's eyes and airways, and cats are especially sensitive. Keep pets out of rooms being painted until the paint is dry and the area is aired out. If your pet wheezes, coughs, or seems distressed, move them to fresh air and call a vet.
